Diamond Pet Foods isa pet food manufacturer that also produce brands like Nutra Nuggets or Taste of the Wild. The brand has earned a good reputation, thanks to its quality commitments, which are generally considered higher than the standard on the American market. But is it enough ? That’s what we’ll explore.
✅ Pros
- Quality Protein Sources: Many recipes feature animal proteins as the first ingredient, such as beef meal, lamb meal, or chicken. Some are pasture raisdes.
- No Corn or Soy : Most formulas avoid these common allergens.
- Added Taurine: Addresses concerns over cardiomyopathy in grain-free recipes and supports heart health.
- AAFCO Compliant: Meets AAFCO nutritional standards for dog food.
- Rigorous Quality Control: Extensive testing protocols, including mycotoxin and microbiological tests.
❌ Cons
- Incomplete Nutritional Information: Ash, calcium, and phosphorus content not provided on some recipes on the official website.
- Unknown Cooking Method: Crucial for evaluating nutrient retention and to consider the impact of cooking on the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs).
- Plant-Based Proteins: Estimated 40-50% of protein content may come from plant-based sources in some formulas.
- Nutrient Representation: Nutrient levels often listed as minimums rather than exact values, creating uncertainty about actual nutritional content.
- Not Human-Grade: Ingredients not explicitly labeled as human-grade.
- Presence of Gluten: Some recipes include barley, which contains gluten.
- Use of Natural Flavors: Inclusion of “natural flavors” which can be controversial.
- Omega Ratio: The Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio could be improved in some formulas.
- Use of White Rice: Some formulas use white rice instead of more nutritious brown rice.

Diamonds Adult Dog Beef Meal & Rice Formula

32/100
Criteria | Evaluation | Comments |
---|---|---|
Carbohydrate Levels | 🔴 High – 36.5% | The carbohydrate content exceeds the ideal threshold. In some dogs, a diet high in carbohydrates can lead to an increased risk of diabetes in the long term and cause liver or pancreas overload. |
Protein Levels | 🟠 Average 25% | This protein level is found in the majority of dog food brands. Even if the protein content is a less reliable indicator than the PCR (protein to calorie ratio), it seems to be in the low average of the market here. It would be preferable to aim higher, of course with a large majority of animal proteins. |
Protein-to-Calorie Ratio | 🔴 Low – 71 | A low protein-calorie ratio means that energy is mainly provided by fats and especially carbohydrates. Except for special cases, this is not ideal. Active dogs or growing dogs will not be satisfied with such levels. |
Protein-to-Phosphorus Ratio | ❓ Not specified | The lack of information on phosphorus content makes it impossible to calculate this ratio. This ratio is crucial for assessing protein quality and potential kidney stress, especially important for senior dogs or those with kidney issues. |
Protein-to-Ash Ratio | ❓ Not specified | Without ash content information, we can’t assess this ratio. A high protein-to-ash ratio typically indicates better quality protein sources. The absence of this information raises questions about protein quality and digestibility. |
Fat Levels | 🟢 Good – 15% | This is a rate found in the average market. Now we need to check the quality of the fats. |
Ash Content | ❓ Not specified | Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any information. Don’t hesitate to contact the manufacturer to know this rate. |
Fiber Levels | 🟢 Good – 3.5% | In other words: crude fiber. It is a specific measure of the insoluble fiber of plant cell walls. It is mainly used to add bulk to stools and promote intestinal transit. The rate here is correct and within the norm. |
Moisture Levels | 🟢 Excellent – 10% | Normal moisture for dry food like kibble. Within the norm. This can indicate a fairly respectful cooking process. |
Calcium Levels | ❓ Not specified | Without this crucial information, it is impossible to properly evaluate this kibble. This is essential information for your dog’s bone and overall health. |
Phosphorus Levels | ❓ Not specified | The absence of phosphorus information is concerning. Phosphorus levels are crucial for assessing kidney health, especially in older dogs. Excessive phosphorus can strain kidneys over time. |
Glycemic Index of Ingredients | 🟠 Average | There are many high GI foods to avoid. For example, wheat, potato, rice, potato starch, etc. Generally, avoid kibble containing grains like wheat, corn, and rice in the first ingredients. In this recipe, ground white rice is the third ingredients. |
Animal vs. Plant-Based Protein Ratio | 🟠 Average – Estimated 60% of animal proteins. | Animal proteins (in their natural state) are generally better digested and absorbed by dogs. Animal proteins contain all the amino acids a dog needs, unlike plant proteins. |
Quality of Animal Protein Sources | 🟢 Good | Beef meal and eggs are a decent source of animal protein. |
Type of Preservatives Used | 🟢 Good | The use of natural preservatives like mixed tocopherols is a positive aspect. These are safer alternatives to artificial preservatives and help maintain the food’s freshness without potential health risks. |
Manufacturing Location Transparency | 🟢 Good | Transparency about manufacturing location builds trust. It allows consumers to research the facility’s safety standards and recall history, contributing to overall product quality assurance. |
Cooking or Processing Method | ❓ Not specified | The lack of information on the cooking method is a concern. Different processing methods can affect nutrient retention and digestibility. Gentle cooking methods are generally preferred to preserve nutrient integrity. |
Quality and Source of Fats | 🟢 Good | Named fat sources, particularly chicken fat, are a positive sign. Quality fats are essential for energy, coat health, and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. The specific mention of sources allows for better assessment of quality. |
Calcium-to-Phosphorus Ratio | ❓ Not specified | It lacks elements to make this calculation. Impossible to calculate due to lack of information. |
Omega-6 to Omega-3 Ratio | 🟠 Slightly unbalanced – 6:1 | The balance between omega-3 and omega-6 could be strengthened, particularly to limit inflammation. A diet richer in omega-6 fatty acids than in omega-3 can cause increased inflammation and reduce the positive impact of omega-3 fatty acids. |
Brand Transparency and Ethical Practices | 🟠 Average | While Diamond provides some information, there’s room for improvement in transparency. More detailed on ingredients or cooking for exemple. |
Veterinary-Formulated Recipes | 🟠 Average | Veterinary supervision is good, but formulation by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist would be ideal. |
Non-GMO Status | 🔴 Concerning | The lack of non-GMO certification is a concern for many pet owners. While the impact of GMOs in pet food is debated, transparency in ingredient sourcing is important for informed consumer choices. |
No Wheat, Gluten, Corn | 🟠 Average, gluten source in some recipes. | The absence of these common allergens is beneficial for dogs with sensitivities. It also indicates a focus on potentially higher-quality, more species-appropriate ingredients. |
Human-Grade Ingredients | 🔴 No | While not all dog foods use human-grade ingredients, their use can indicate higher quality standards. However, feed-grade ingredients can still be nutritious if sourced and processed properly. |
Organic Certification | 🔴 No | Lack of organic certification doesn’t necessarily indicate poor quality, but organic ingredients can reduce exposure to pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. It’s a bonus feature some pet owners prioritize. |
Formulas Tested and Backed by Scientific Research | 🟢 Good | Scientific backing is crucial for validating nutritional claims and ensuring the food meets dogs’ needs. It demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based nutrition. |
Added Taurine | 🟢 Added | Adding taurine is a proactive step, especially important in grain-free formulas. |
Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Rice Formula

The composition is more satisfactory this time. It’s suitable for large breed dogs, focusing on moderation, particularly with calcium and phosphorus levels (now clearly stated), which are well controlled to prevent excessively rapid growth. The protein density could still be improved for certain dogs, especially active ones. However, it still contains gluten and high-glycemic ingredients.

The macronutrient distribution is quite contrary to what you would typically expect from kibble for weight control. Generally, protein levels are increased, carbohydrate levels are reduced, and fiber content is elevated. In this case, only the fat content has been significantly lowered (quite drastically, in fact). As a result, the carbohydrate content is approximately 52%, which is quite high. This means the proportion of animal-based protein in this kibble is very low.

50/100
These kibbles are quite interesting, as they’re formulated for working dogs or those engaged in endurance sports. There are several notable aspects: a high protein content (91% as claimed by the brand), low carbohydrates (19%), and an increased fat level to provide the necessary energy for active dogs. However, the calcium and phosphorus levels are still missing, which would be needed to improve the overall Sheriff Score rating.

Diamond Naturals Cage-free Chicken & Sweet Potato
Formula for Dogs

37/100
The ‘Cage Free’ range offers the benefit of higher-quality animal proteins, as the animals are raised in better conditions. Unfortunately, this advantage is overshadowed by other factors, such as the high carbohydrate content and relatively low proportion of protein.

Our Opinion
Diamond Naturals offer good quality animal sources, skipping corn and soy. It’s a good start. They add taurine , their quality control is tight.
However some recipes hide their numbers. Ash, calcium, phosphorus. The cooking method is a mystery too. It matters. Heat can make or break a nutrient.
Not all formulas hit the mark. The Extreme Athlete line flexes its muscles, but the Light formula stumbles. It’s a mixed bag. Some recipes lean too heavily on plants for protein. Others flirt with gluten and high-glycemic ingredients. It’s not ideal for every dog.
The brand could shine brighter. More transparency would help. Less carbs, more animal protein in some recipes.
For now, Diamond Naturals sits in the middle of the pack on some recipes.
